Gold Coast Bulletin Takes the Plunge

There were bikini models as far as the eye could see at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre yesterday when 200 girls fronted a casting call for the Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival.

Grace Porter, 16, and Tess Crichton, 18, decided to cool off while waiting to impress judges for one of the 20 positions up for grabs.

“I’ve never done an underwater photo shoot before” Ms Crichton said

“It was good but it was really hard work.”

Ms Porter, a model from Brisbane, said the Gold Coast was the best place for a swimwear fashion festival.

“It is the Gold Coast — it is bikinis and shorts all the way,” she said.

The sentiment is the same for festival director, Leanne St George.

“The festival is all about celebrating our iconic outfits and climate,” Ms St George said.

“It is about summer-inspired fashion.

“There is only one (swimwear) fashion week in the world and that is in Florida. We are unique in Australia.

“Why would all the Asia-Pacific designers not come to the Gold Coast, which has better beaches, to develop the industry in this part of the world?”

The beautiful weather and swimwear matched the models, Ms St George said.

“Swim models are a healthy type of model with good muscle tone and they are fit and active,” she said.

“They are very different from models that would run a catwalk in Paris.”

In its second year, the event will be held over five days from November 19.
